660 grizz studdering

hello this is honus. just joined the site and was hopeing someone here could help me out !? i ride a 02 660 grizz and am having a problem. the last ride it was on ran outstanding all day in and out of water and sand bars, then out of the blue would die. finally got it running again and got it back to the truck. found out it was from some crap in the carb.. not a big deal.. it also seemed to be running really hot but no temp lite. anyways took carb apart found some junk in there, put a new kit in it, and back on. started back up and exhaust gets really hot, really fast. (the firts four to five inches turn red), and it will pop or backfire through the intake. so back off with the carb for another cleaning, and i have had it off about 9 times now. also had tank off and cleaned, and instaled fuel filter. iv taken exhuast of to make sure nothing is pluged, and i have checked the vales. i know it running lean but im sure i have checked everything many times over. i have also checked for air leaks and nothing. wasnt sure if i could have a bad valve or whats going on. please help.. honus22

Re: 660 grizz studdering

Hey Honus do a quick search with the "forum search" option. There is a wealth of information on the grizz 660's on here. I'm going to say you need the vented side panels and heat tape kits which I believe yamaha will replace free of charge. I'm new to the grizz myself so i'm just regurgitating information I have read on this forum so far. Good luck buddy.

Re: 660 grizz studdering

The pipe turning red sounds like it getting to much fuel getting hot and boiling the gas in the tank.....not sure the heat fighter kit would work for that.
Also check the vent line on the gas cap a few times mine has been plugged with mud and has killed the engine

red pipe is lean burnin. Black smoke is rich burnin. Sorry to correct ya murm but i had to be done.

Also look at ur plug, it usually is a good indication of whats goin on in the cyl.
What color is ur plug?

Re: 660 grizz studdering

Backfiring through the carb is also an indication of lean

Could be a number of things, valves(you checked), air/fuel mixture(can turnout screw to test), do you have a snorkel and then removed it? Did you oil your filter with the proper oil?

Re: 660 grizz studdering

thanks for all the ideas guys. everything that everybody has said i have done. (many, many times). i have worked on just about anything with a motor, (so really i know what im doing), and nothing has stumped me like this carb has. found out today that it IS in the carb. my buddy has 04 660 grizz and i took his carb off and put it on mine, and now it's back to running like a champ. my 02 with 7k miles runs just as hard if not harder than my buddys 04 660 and anothers 700fi grizz. but back to carb. there has got to be hair line crack or something that i cant see with the naked eye that's letting it suck air. i know that the carb is as clean as possible. everything on the bike is stock. the only thing done is it had a valve job done at 1500 miles. iv played with mix screw moved the needle up and down and adj float and still dose it. so im done with that carb and ordering a brand new one. but again thank you to everybody that put there 2cents in. (anyone want to buy a good USED carb... lol!) honus
