South Ghost?

I guess that's the name, wanting to take my young kids 7&10 for a ride. Is this a good area for them, they are just starting out, and getting tired of riding in circles in a field. Any info or tips would be great. Thanks

Re: South Ghost?

oh yah,,,,, Ghost Waiprous,,,,,,,,,,,,,, never ridden there,,,,,,,,, looks nice from pictures. Just a note on taking young ones riding,,,,,,,, don't forget the safety gear and take it slow,,,,,,,,,,, the wost no-no is to have a small one in front and try and control a machine with one hand. also I have seen first hand, face smashes into the handle bars on big bumps,,,,,,, explain to them if the machine starts to roll to get away from it,,,,,,,, teach them the use of a compass or gps,,,,,,, make a game of finding thier way out of a pretend accedent,,,,,,,,,, sounds scary, but if dad gets hurt,,,, what do they do????

Re: South Ghost?

They have all the gear, and they don't like sitting in the truck, so they listen very well. Just wondering more if it's a good place with shorter trails, or easy trails.

Re: South Ghost?

heya,

I have been there a couple times in the past few years. There are lots of easy trails, just be prepared to turn around if the trail gets steep. This is a great area to learn to ride hills as well because you can find all types, from gentle slopes to steep fall on your but. the only disadvantage was deep ruts put in by 4x4 jeep/truck usage.

We stayed at the South Gost Campground and atv'ed right from there. It was a great time.

Re: South Ghost?

Just a little past North ghost camp ground (waiporous valley road) there is a 4X4 trail that runs by the river that is relatively smooth and wide open. One of the wife's favorite riding areas, goes right back to the base of the mountains, stops just outside the park. A nice long trail before you have to cross the river or go up a fairly steep portion of the trail. Bottom of the hill would be a good place to turn around. Would have taken the kids there this summer (7&9 girls) for sure but grandma & grandpa kept them for two months.

Re: South Ghost?

Get the Waiparous map first. Alberta SRD - Areas - Southern Rockies - Ghost-Waiparous Access-Management Plan - Brochure and Maps
Head to the South Ghost PRA staging area. Go up the Lost Knife/Meadow Creek 4x4 road, points 49, 77, 87, 89, 91, and 125 on the map. You can download to your gps too.

Get the Maclean Creek map here: http://www.srd.gov.ab.ca/lands/recre...ountry_map.pdf.
Head to Maclean Creek PRA staging area. Head SW on easy road to gravel pit (the weird 5 black spots on a grey square symbol). Bomb around the gravel pit to gain confidence. Explore from there at your own - easy riding if that's what you need, or gets much more difficult if you want more.

You must have your bikes registered and insured (need special insurance for underage riders). Must have headlight and taillight (can use a bike light from MEC). If you choose to be disobedient, you will be ticketed.

Have fun. Might see you there.
