Removing Hood Foam??

I'm looking to pull all the foam off my hood. Just wondering what's the best way to get it off? Looks like it's going to be a b!itch.... They glue it so they stay lol. I don't want to scrape off all the glue afterwards. Will heat take it off, or adhesive remover?

Brakleen is hard on plastics from what I have heard... Don't really want to experiment on a hood lol.

If you use a heat gun on low setting or use the wifes hair dryer, slowly heat up the outside hood surface, just warm to the touch. Dont get it too warm or the glue will stay on the surface. That worked for me on my XP panels. As for removing the glue I bought a 4 liter container of wax and adhesive remover from Acklands. The same stuff Body shops use. Not cheap, but it works well.

On the inside of the hood you will be safe to use break clean. its hard on clear coating thats all. I have done it on a number of sleds!

Re: Removing Hood Foam??

Dont use brakleen I use it at work all the time, And from expreince it is very hard on plastic. Heat gun and goog gone is probably the safest way to remove it.

Re: Removing Hood Foam??

Cut out as much as possible then use wd-40 and soak the foam. Let it sit for about 10-15 min then start rubbing. You could use something plastic to help scrape some of it. We have done all of our hoods this way and have never found anything that works better. The 3M remover might work good , but have never tried it.

Re: Removing Hood Foam??

Don't use brake clean - use brake clean ????

Who do you listen to?!? How about, use brake clean but it could damage or dull the finish on your plastics. I have used brake clean on the surface of the hood on my XP to clean off residue from glue and it did not harm the finish. Maybe I was lucky, but I was going to be adding a wrap again anyways so I didn't care.

Products I have used to remove glue reside - WD40 for minor stuff, BrakeClean, didn't work all that great anyways, Sticker/Decal remover - that stuff sokes into the glue and removes very well, but it can damage some surfaces. Don't use it on clear plastics = bad......goo gone, it dulled the plastic.

Now for simply removing the foam, I don't know about your cat, but the ski-doo stuff, you grab and pull. I found the trick was to not pull upwards, it left more glue on the surface, but to pull backwards, in the direction the foam travels. It may not work. I found when adding heat it softens the glue and leaves more residue to clean up. Really, its the inside of the hood, I wasn't worried about a little residue being in there, but some people are very particular about it. Have fun!

Re: Removing Hood Foam??

brake clean will wreck plastics, depending on what make up they r, we use 3m adhesive remover and it works well.spray it on ,rub it around and give it a second shot and wait a bit and all the glue will come off.then just a few sprays of windex.

Re: Removing Hood Foam??

Yup, peel as much off by hand as you can, then like nm said, use wd40 and a plastic scraper to remove it.... Wd40 is actually designed as a cleaner, and then they found it can lubricate as well...... I used it to get spraypaint off my truck once, and it never left any marks...... Try to avoid too much heat, if you're going to use a heat gun, as it can weaken plastics, and even distort it.........3m decal remover spray works okay too, but don't let it soak on plastic too long....

Re: Removing Hood Foam??

OK, HERE IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW....peel of as much foam as you can, then sit down and pour yourself a drink....now as your looking at your sled, carefully close all panels and stand back four steps. Finally, take a few solid pulls from your cocktail and stare intensely at your sled. By the time you arrive at the conclusion that you are unable to see 'inside' your hood, it will be time for another drink. By the time you are on your seventh, you will no longer care on way or another, but you will be able to return all products to canadian tire
