boondocker turbo on m8

Hey i have an 08 m8 basically stock.(can and air kit) I am wanting to turbo it here this fall and i was wondering if anybody can give me some tips on the different turbo kits out there... boondocker, aerocharger, mcx....

Also how difficult they are to tune in... im not going to run mine at max boost... probably somewhere around the 10-11 lbs boost i figure... does a guy have to basically guess and test on the boondockerbox settings or are they provided with the kit? any single pipes work well with the turbo kits or is it not worth it?

And what are the actual hp ratings? i've heard 240 on pump gas... don't believe it... i've heard 275 on race fuel.... just wondering what i am actually going to get for my 6 grand.

Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ryan

Re: boondocker turbo on m8

Well the boondocker kits work quite well. I am installing one on an M1000 right now.. On the "pump" gas kit True honest numbers i would have to estimate about 185 approx. At like 8lbs boost.. The pump gas kits can only be turned up to about 8-9lbs boost.. Also with the pump gas kit i'd recommend putting like 2-3G of race fuel(VP C111) in per tank if no other reason as a safe guard if a person gets some crappy fuel.. On race gas i can see where it would be just over the 200hp mark.. As i've seen dyno sheets from a M1000 boosted and at 10lbs boost it made 250hp, granted it had a couple small exhaust leaks.. Also you get some guide lines to set things at when you buy most any of the turbo kits.. I like the nice clean simple install of the aerocharger turbo kits and they work well.. The only draw back to them that i see is the fact if you do happen to hurt your motor and debris goes thru the turbo.. If you have to rebuild an aerocharger it has to go back to the states and they are not cheap to fix.. Also they are alot more complkicated to adjust your boost setting than the boondocker kits.. I installed over a dozen turbo kits last year alone.. And a couple this year already, and more in the works.. I will be continuing to do turbo installs and work when i'm in mcbride aswell.. I think that it will provide a really good and unique opportunity for me as i will be able to install the kit and put baseline settings in then take it to the hill and test that specific machine and get it set-up for the customer so that alls they should have to do in the end is put gas in and do some fine tuning..

Re: boondocker turbo on m8

you will get around the 225-240 at 10-11lbs on straight race gas. you will not be able to run 11lb on pump gas. It is not as simple as bolting on the kit and going to the races. it will take you some trial and error to dial it in. once dialed in should work real nice for ya. You will have to go through the engine and kit once ever 2-3 rides or you will likly have a catastophic failure. things tend to come loose run 240hp. Just know that there will be alot more preventitave maintance than what is considered normal. You will likly play with the clutching a bit as there is a lot to be gained by properly clutching it even though the kits come with clutching. Well worth the invesment. I would honestly look at selling your sled and getting one with the kit already on it. There so cheap right now. you spend 6g on the kit, you can by m8 with turbos for 11-14g right now. Is you sled worth 8g, if it is you can avoid the cluster f$#k trying to get the turbo installed. hope this helps. I know when I did mine I wish I could have had alot more advice available, was a painful experience, but well worth it.

Re: boondocker turbo on m8

Thanks that is good info to know. so on my m8 on pump gas with a touch of race fuel per tank at 8-9 lbs boost i should be running bout 170 hp or is that 185 hp for the 800? and if i were to splurge and go with the race gas turbo on my 8 running 10lbs+ boost i should be in the 220 range?

you seem to be quite familiar with the turbos... how do the m8T's compare to the yami turbos?

i ride mcbride quite a bit, renshaw mostly but if i do get this turbo i might message u and see if ur kickin around and able to ride and we'll hit up the hills this winter.

Re: boondocker turbo on m8

The 185 number is for the 800.. I've had a fair bit of experience with turbo's.. And My shop will be in the old ride and hide building in mcbride but will now be called Mountain valley motorsports. I'm moving there next weekend and have plans on having the shop open for business very shortly after that.. If you need something or just want to say hi or see the shop definitely stop by... And mrcoops has lots of good info on the turbo stuff aswell as he ran one all last winter and maybe the winter before not sure though.. He also rides with other guys that run cats on boost..

Actually the price for the race gas that you'll need we were selling it at specialty last winter for 525.00 a barrel.. I dont think that it'll have gone up to much for this season maybe 20-30.00/barrell.. And should get 5 complete tanks out of that.

The 185hp version should work really well.. The biggest thing is that with a turbo you wont lose near what a non-turbo sled losses at alltitude.. And i was talking to the head guy at boondocker usa the other day and he told me that the pg kit on the cat worked the best out of all the pg kits and the most power out of all there pg kits.. Also with the pg kits they run a smaller turbo so that means that it will spool up fatsre than the RG kit.. Not saying that they have alot of lag to begin with, but they do have a hair of lag.. M8 on boost will eat a non boosted Xp unless the M8 rider is not a good rider at all and the guy on the Xp is a really good rider..

Re: boondocker turbo on m8

right right right, yea one of the xps is on juice but the others are just stock with cans. im equally as good of a rider as my buddies with xps if not better, not to pump my own tires or anything, lol. yea the pg turbo is becoming more and more attractive just because im not sure if im prepared to spend 3000 in fuel this winter haha.

not to mention the pg turbo's are a cheaper kit and i do like to do a lot of boondocking through the trees and what not so a quicker spool up would be better.

well these are all great tips, thanks a ton for this. i was going to call somebody at boondocker this week and see if i could get the inside tips from but it seems i don't have to do that anymore.

and as for the inspecting the motor and turbo... i've rebuilt many sled motors in my day just wondering what a guy needs to be looking for... i've only had to work on them when they are broke so its easy to find the failures... what should a guy be looking for when its not broken yet?

Re: boondocker turbo on m8

The biggest thing that you'll have to do as preventitive maintanance is to go over your sled and make sure that the head bolt havn't come loose or anything else.. It's just mainly a good checkover of the sled.. Making sure that nothings come loose or broke.. One M1000 we turbo'd last year had about 1000milesput on it and it ran good except for one hickup, it broke a head bolt but the bolts hadn't been checked. Not saying that it'd prevented it and he was also running it at like 16-17lbs boost..
