Question Exhaust y pipe modifications

Does anyone know the name of the place that does the y-pipe modifications on the ski-doo y-pipes? I was talking with some guys from bonneville last year, and they had their y-pipes modified to flow much better, and as a result quite a bit more power, but i can't remember where they said they had them modified...........was about a 8hp gain, if i remember correctly. It would be kinda like the aftermarket cat y-pipes i imagine.......

Re: Exhaust y pipe modifications

I'm with AB Boy. I'd wanna see a dyno sheet on that before believing an 8 HP gain on a y-pipe mod.

Re: Exhaust y pipe modifications

the only thing i can think of is using a dye grinder or dremal and smoothing out the edges on the inside of the y-pipe. The arctic cat y-pipes are really restrictive and the aftermarket ones are opened up way better.

Re: Exhaust y pipe modifications

I don't know about modified y-pipes, but crank shop and dyno port only claim an increase of 3hp with their y's and I have never seen published dyno reports on either. For $200-300 which is what I would safely assume you would be putting towards a modified y-pipe for very minimal gains. If you really want to add the ponies why not go with a high comp head, unless you already have one.

Re: Exhaust y pipe modifications

have you guys ever seen into a stock ski-doo y pipe? versus a dynoport or aftermarket one?

the skidoo ones are just a sloppy peice of work. ports arent even the same size as on the motor, doesnt line up right with the ports with the bolt pattern, the flange has huge gaps behind it, with sloppy welds and lots of gaps and spaces and areas for carbon to buildup. i wish there was a good way to clean these up. it would need to be welded on the inside and then went through with some sort of reemer at the flange. also matched to the motor aswell.

i bet there would be some gains from it.

Re: Exhaust y pipe modifications

as per... DynoTech Research - motorcycle and snowmobile dyno testing facility

the dynoport Y-pipe on dynotech research gained about 2hp peak and 4hp in the midrange

Thats from another site where the poster had access to the report. Can you honestly say you would notice 2hp peak difference on a pull? Now you start adding up other gains, sure, I can see the benefit, but thats a big cost for a few HP - $100 per 1 HP.

Re: Exhaust y pipe modifications

I guess for the guys who need more than 150hp in a lightweight chassis, sure, I won't disagree...but I don't know what Summitric is trying to achieve either. Average guy who sleds, 2-3 hp is not going to be noticed, now add 2-3 here, 2-3 there, and another 2-3 yeah maybe. And for racing or something, okay maybe they need every ounce of performance they can get.

FWIW - Straightline’s 800R Y-pipe is a guaranteed 2-3hp gain. There’s no sacrificing torque or mid-range power to pick up the extra power either. Peak power remains the same as stock at 8100-8200 rpm. as per their website.

I have been looking at the different y-pipes for awhile myself. I have found other ways of spending $200-$300 rather than a fancy y-pipe. I mean how could I afford fancy handgaurds otherwise~!

Re: Exhaust y pipe modifications

I am more interested in it for the 1000rt........ 800 engines won't gain much, but the 1000 y-pipe is very poorly made...i understand they make the y-pipe a few inches longer and with the dynoport single pipe and a good exhaust can, will produce almost 15hp. That is substantial. Actually for the 800's at $100/1hp is a good deal. Price out reed valves, and different reports give them anywhere from a 0 - 4hp gain..... Cost is about $400.00 which is the equivalent of the y-pipe mod.......hmmmmmmm, maybe i'll be picking up one of those dynoport y-pipes for the mighty 800........
