2003 cr250 transmission question

I just picked up an '03 cr250. It has a brand new top end and it seems to run great, but when I shift it into first gear from neutral, it clunks abnormally loud. I tried shifting into second instead and it did the same thing. I thought it was the clutch, but it holds the bike when I stop, and shifts fine once it is out of neutral. I took the chain off and put it in gear while it wasn't running and rotated the front sprocket by hand and it rotated about 1/4 of a rotation freely. I am assuming that this "play" is not a good thing. Any input or suggestions on how to fix this problem?? Thanks
