Re: BDSO 2008 is in the HISTORY Books

Just want to thank everyone who showed up and actually toughed it out on a very cold and very windy day on the glacier. We want to thank our sponsors and apologize to them also.We had aa hell of a time with banners in hte high wind. Who could have predicted we would have the coldest April on record this year. Seeing frozen waterfalls on the drive home in late April is just wrong.
We thought we had the grooming problem solved this year yet somehow it got pulled out from under us again. Nobody was more frustrated than me at the end of the day pulling a 200 plus pounds skiff with my turbo down that trail at 5mph.

Only good news about that is the money we had for grooming and then some will be donated from you, our sponsors and the BDSO to help keep sledding areas open. More to follow on that.

I need to put a few more thanks out to everybody who helped us.
Our judges-Fab and Summit Seeker, Red Dog.
First Aid-Whistler Cowboy
BBQ- Chef Phil
Guys who helped set up-- Blair Parker, Ted Morrisy, Roger and Ryan Allain(spelling) and the Fabster of coarse ,hope I did not miss anybody. And everybody who helped tear down. Boy that was quick.

Want to thank Red Dog for suppling music again and Randy for MCing .

Want to thank everybody for packing garbage out. We found very little garbage both on the hill, trail or in the parking lot. GOOD JOB.

Special thanks to Team Summer Sucks for helping out and the BDSO champ jersey. Very cool.

Now on to a couple of other things.

First off anybody know how the kid is doing who broke his leg down playing by the lake while the races were going on.?

Thanks Greg from mountain mod mania having the heli out there and with garbage pick up. You too Matt (SledJunkies).

Sorry to hear that your tires got slashed at the banquet Greg. That sucks. Thanks Linc for fixing him up.

And I hope the guy who hit the truck in the parking lot comes forward also.

Not sure what the future of the BDSO is but we will all step back for a bit and go from there.

Thank You
Shawn Hamilton

Thanks SledShot awesome vid and write up on your site. thanks for taking care of our sponsors.

Re: BDSO 2008 is in the HISTORY Books

Turned out I was to busy and really only got a few pics. We did our best for our sponsors with the banners. People were nice enough to help dig around the course and put banners up for all to see.

Re: BDSO 2008 is in the HISTORY Books

Hardkore it is great to see the safety netting, toilets and that the garbage was being taken care of. Hats off to you guys for getting insurance and running the event properly. Nice to see the manufacturers supporting the event also. I know all about the aftermath that goes with an event like this when it isn`t done right. You guys did a great job getting it all together, doing it right and looking after the masses. I wasn`t able to attend but I still appreciate all of your groups hard work.
Donating the monies to support snowmobiling is huge too, people don`t realize just how hard the game has got.
How many people showed up?
Who got to drop the flag, is that Nick in the pic.?

Re: BDSO 2008 is in the HISTORY Books

I mean we got hurt as organizers. Every year the weather has been great, the drags and hillclimb go off without a hitch. Last year was such a high and this year from our point of view it was a low, real low.

The weather screwed us, we had to cancel the hillclimbs which is the meat and potatoes of the BDSO,we had pricing problems with the hotel of choice and had to change last minute, and finally we got screwed once again with the grooming.

Thats what I meant buy getting stung. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the kind words. I must say watching a porta pottie being dropped on a glacier was a first and it got used so it was well worth it getting it there. With the winds as high as they were it was all over the place as was the heli trying to set it down. The pilot was good. This was our first year with sponsors and it was cool to have all the 2009 in one sspot to check out and test .Not that I had time but I hope others did even in the arctic chill.

There are always bad years with events like this. You work and plan and organize as best you can, then something totally out of your control ruins the whole thing. All you can do is learn from it and do the best at what is in your control. We had to cancel a poker rally here in Whitecourt a few years ago due to lack of snow and as the chairman for the rally I felt like a failure and sort of like we were robbed but there was nothing more we could do. Sounds like you guys had things very well organized and planned & that's all you can do as volunteers. Better luck next year.
