So I got an email from Apple. My hard drive is going to fail. They don't know when just that it will.

Phoned the Apple store in Calgary and I have to leave my computer there for a week. Does that make sense?

Any other place where this can be repaired?

It's likely the predictive failure sensor on the SMART drives. It's a good thing.

The Apple store is as good of a place than any. Comparable rates etc.

My Mac Dealer is also a very good place to go. Westworld in the West End is also good. HDD replacement is a pretty easy thing to do. Just make sure they image your drive before so you don't lose anything.

Back ups using time machine are a great idea.

I can't imagine not having backups (2) for my computer.

It's insane how many times I hear about people who have lost everything due to drive failure and no backups.

Not me, alway back up. Even Macs Die, and i only own Mac's.
Like an Avy Air Bag and Beacon, hope to never use it...but just in case!

True. But anything with moving parts can fail. PC / Mac or anything else.

Most common failure are fans, hard drives and power supplies.

I think the only difference in the Mac version is it has a FireWire 800 interface. USB2 has max throughout of 400mbps and FireWire 800 is double that. That said, it's all dependent on what other devices are being used. Generally the USB has more devices on it (keyboard / mouse / card readers / other drives) that slow performance on the USB chain.

I have generally found FW800 drives to be much better performing and usually worth the premium you pay for them.

Most Mac don't have USB3 (except the very new ones)

No there isn't. There is a repair shop or a geek kind of guy that goes around.

This is a warranty fix and I doo have an external hard drive but I can't fit everything on it because when the Apple Store made the partitions they weren't big enough.

I probably have to buy another external hard drive, partition it properly and then take it too them.

Does it make sense that changing the hard drive takes a week (or rather they need my computer for a week were the words the guy used)??

I get that it's way faster, but for me I'm not transferring alot every day. So for the $350 difference. Not worth it to me. If it was $100 or even $150 difference I would have pulled the trigger on the Mac

Soooo...Hal sent you a message that a component might fail, not sure when but it will. Hmmmm, kinda like 2001 A Space Odyssey, then the computer kills you...

Ya', I guess sort of like that! Here the words from Apple……...

Apple has determined that certain 1TB Seagate hard drives used in 21.5-inchand 27-inch iMac systems may fail. These systems were sold between October 2009 and July 2011.

Our records show that you have an iMac with an affected 1TB Seagate hard drive. Apple will replace your hard drive with a new one, free of charge, under the .
