Anyone who likes riding ATV,s or Sleds in the Nordegg area should be aware of the attempt to get the area reclassified as a Wildland Park. We dont have many details yet but I'm sure it will severely restrict ATV,s snowmobiles and random camping. There is a meeting on Wednesday April 27 at 7:30 in the Nordegg Community hall and we are trying to get enough support to stop this or at least limit it. If Wildland Park status for Nordegg isnt in your best intrest I would hope to see you wednesday.

I'm going for sure. Hope to convince my buddies to come with me. Next will be south fork. Sundre. Ghost. Bragg. Fawk. We have to get organized in Alberta or we will be living in a bubble. They have enough (parks) here already

This is what I found on-line and is not my quote !

According to the vision statement for the Bighorm Wildland Park ALL motorized recreational activity would be banned.

Vision

  • AWA is seeking Wildland Park protection for the Bighorn as was promised by the Alberta government in 1986.
  • Boundaries of the Bighorn Wildland Recreation Area, as delineated in 1986 by the government of Alberta, must be upheld, and the area protected under legislation as a Wildland Park.
  • No surface access for industrial development within the Wildland.
  • No motorized recreation within the Wildland.
  • In the adjacent transition zone the Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs) and Critical Wildlife Zones must be placed under moratorium until proper assessment has been conducted to identify areas requiring protection. Surface disturbance must not be allowed within these areas.
  • Any industrial activities occurring within the transition zone must be conducted with the highest standard

Edited: One should remember that the above is a proposal of 1986 since much has changed over the years. Not much scenes over thinking things until we hear what they have to say at the Nordegg meeting.

was good to see a lot of concerned people out there last night, lots from Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary area's. was good to hear from some of the people and business's of Nordegg and area. the majority of the people there, where in favor of recreational vehicle access as it is. businesses in the area rely on tourists, from what I heard they were not in support of the AWA organization and there agenda. AWA did not show up, and the meeting went on with community business, as far as I know?

good turn out by the community and concerned users of the area. great to meet a few more snow and mud people, and some had driven a fair distance.

The meeting went well and the turn out was great. It seems that a small number of elected council were advocating on our behalf for something they had no clue about. They were unprepared for the amount of opposition and couldnt answer most of our concerns. We have scheduled another meeting and I am sure they will be more prepared next time but I think we got the message across that we are not going to a park status.

It was great meeting all you last night. It was a lovely evening to be in the mountains.
Im really pleased that your community meeting went well.
We had a great convesation out front...lots of putting faces to names.
You folks have the perfect opportunity to move forward in a positive way.
The stewardship ethic was bubbling to the surface.
Let me know if I can help.

isn't it always that way just a handful of people always trying to rezone or reclasify an area?!!? Years ago they changed an area by Cadomin into a wildland park and now we can't ride the trails we always used to and most of them are getting grown in to where the horses can't even ride on them now or hikers and mountain bikers . I have heard hikers and mountain biker say that it was better when the quads were allowed to ride there because it kept the trails open and free of willows etc.

I just heard that they closed down the cardinal headwaters trail until July and about three years ago I talked to a local fish and wildlife officer and he said they were trying to close the trail all together and that trail was actually built for ATVs so they have some thing up their sleeve for sure. Meanwhile 500 yards away we are digging up and Mining and blasting at a coal mine. How many damn parks do these people figure they need?

It's good to see there were so many people that showed up at that meeting because around here we don't really have any clubs to stand up for all the areas that they're trying to shut down .
