Android is the software that runs on the phone. Google makes software and lets handset manufacturers (motorola, htc, samsung, sony, etc.) use the software for free. It is a direct competitor to the iphone with very similar features. I have had a couple of different models and they are awesome IMO.

Android operating system rocks...Blackberry dying a painful slow death, iPhone unless you jailbreak it is simply an extension of the Apple Empire...

...Andriod is to mobility as UNIX is to the computing world...:d

Totally disagree...I agree there will be less consumer level interest in the BB, but definitely not on the business side. The android and the i-phone cannot touch the BB for business use.

The casual users, yes will love and flock to the android and i-phone will all the apps and games and such, but that is not the market that BB targets...Even the Torch which has been bashed on forums and in reviews was never intended to compete with the others, but gets bashed anyway since it hasnt lived up to some peoples expectations as an 'android killer'...

In the business circles that I run in you will never see an Android phone or an I-phone unless someone brought their wife along...

Just a matter of time until apple or andriod release an enterprise solution for their operating systems.

There has been lots of talk of this already, but Im not convinced the business community will buy in...I-phone has been out for a long time already, and there is very little uptake in the business community. Android has the best chance, but still considered 'untested' as a business device. The i-phone still carries the 'Apple' stigma...You dont see major corporations running Macs, and these same corporations wont drop the BB for the I-phone.

To me right now its perfect, let the BB keep developing towards the needs of the business client, which leaves room for the Android and the I-phone to chase the consumer market.

Android will be the big threat in the future because it is an operating system as opposed to a 'phone'. This means you have multiple manufacturers all working in unison towards a certain market, this in my opinion will be the biggest threat to the I-phone...

Fully understand what you are saying, however I do deal with several enterprise clients that are now running mac's as their front end PC's and Linux for servers...... Android I agree will be the one to really put Blackberry on pins & needles in the business sector however, I do also know that Apple is gaining a positive reputation name for themselves in that sector as well. It will definitely be interesting to see what happens in the coming years!

I agree!! Personally I think that BB should be pooping their pants a bit since the Torch was supposed to be a real contender with the Androids, and so far the reviews have almost killed it in the US...However I know tons of people up here that have been on the waiting lists forever, and are going crazy to get it this week or next if there isnt yet another delay.

All in all technology is moving so fast, and I think Google/Android will fill their pockets at a quicker pace than BB in the next few years. Bigger pockets=more research and development

By that do you mean technically superior but not adopted by the masses because of its lack of user friendliness! :p Isn't that what happened with unix.... Just sayin'

Hey, I know this was posted a few months ago, but the Torch purchasing while not magnificent at first is strong and steady - it's anything but "dead" or "killed". Apple sold most of it's new phones in the first few weeks of being released, and pulled really big numbers, Torch purchases did not surge like that, but the purchase rate is strong and steady and the numbers are starting to add up to significant revenue for RIM. They are much less "fad" like and much more like strong business model.

I would think what is really happening here is that business minded people are buying it, and I think what business people do is wait a bit to make sure it works good, then buy it. Unlike that crazy "lets buy the next cool phone because it's out now and just don't care to wait and see if it's a good business phone because we are consumers, and we like to consume". So you see significantly different purchase pattern's between the two.

And yes they might not be totally up on the latest wiz bang gadgetry but the thing works dam*ed well for business users and does everything it needs to and does it well, you can poo poo on it all you want, but it works very well for business customers.
:twocents:

(I seem to be on a rant today)

Your right when you say that the BB is a better business phone. I will be ditching my iPhone and getting a Torch early next year. The iPhone is a pretty decent gadget and I like it, but it's hard to run a business with.
