So I flipped the lid tonight to check oil and coolant. Just give a looking over and I found a little present. IMG_0583.jpg IMG_0584.jpg

Possibly. Kind of a weird spot. Those risers have a weep hole on the bottom side for self draining. Unless it got plugged up. I hooked the garden hose up to it last night. Everything seems clear. Good flow too.

Silt sometimes gets built up inside and holds water in weird spots. Most of my boats are cooled from the pump so I always pull the block drain plugs and rod the silt out, manifolds get the hoses pulled and a good once over too. not as many problems with lightning manifolds, powerflows hold a lot of silt too.

I’m thinking a good scrubbing before winterizing every year is a good idea. It takes nothing to pull the hoses off and check everything out. I have lots of room to work on this engine to so that makes it easier.

Hey guys. So a couple questions here. I’m going to jerk this 305 outta my boat. It has 172 hours on it now, so if anyone is looking for a 305 it’s pretty clean and I don’t want it sitting in my garage this winter so it will be cheap. Now to the questions.

1) can I go buy a crate 350 from gm and throw it in this boat? Using my current intake and manifolds?

2) I have a ATP-309. According to there website, unless I’m reading it wrong this pump can handle a 350? Or should I upgrade it as well?

All my engine buddy’s know engines and vehicles well but not sure on the marine side.

If you're buying a new crate, I'd go with an HT383 and that 309 will handle a lot of power so there's no worry there.

The intake might not fit Vortec style heads and the carb might be a bit small for your new mill. The exhaust manifolds should fit fine on most heads., there are SBC heads that have raised exhaust ports though so do your homework. IMCO powerflo exhaust manifolds are a much nicer piece and don't rob you of HP, Lightnings are really nice but more $$.

I done a similar thing about 12 years ago, I also had a AT-309, I had a marine power efi 350, I replaced it with a GMPerformance ZZ383 and if i remember right all parts changed over fine except I couldn't reuse the efi system as it did not have the ZZ383 compatibility. I put a high rise intake and a 4 barrel on there and tuned it my self.

If i remember right a vortec has the intake mounting bolts in the up and down position, if its not a vortec the intake mounting bolts would be going into the head perpendicular if that makes any sense. The high rise and 4 barrel where cheap anyway.

Keep in mind you will probably want to re impeller it again with more power.

You will not regret more power. My 383 gained me about 400rpm WOT so I re impellered it and pulled that 400rpm back out which dropped my cruise rpm about 200rpm, which in turn lowered my fuel consumption. I ran that engine for 150hrs before I sold the boat so there would have been a little payback of some kind on the original cost with the better fuel economy and the better resale on the boat. My 350 was just a cast block as well so I lost some weight too.

I'd go with a 383 and never look back if I was you.

I agree, at the time I didn't know any better, I seen more HP=More better, If I would have got the HT I would have had a program for the EFI as well.....

Ok. I’m running a double A right now. Gp pricing is ruthless with pricing. Will most likely look in edmonton or south. 383 eh. Ok. Well that’s the path I will take. I’m always loaded down so as longs as it’s reliable I’m game.

Call Brett Smyl at Mighty Peace Powersports in Peace River. He's a boater and a great guy to deal with.

The low torque curve may get you cruising with an A3 or even A4 at a nice low rpm and with lots of flow to get you on step. Low rpm will keep it reliable longer, just don't want to "lug" it down and make it work too hard. HT383 peak torque at 3000 and max HP at 4200

I have the ZZ383 in a 19" Eagle Sport Step Tec. Just freshened it and rebuild entire boat this summer. Switched to a SS A2 in a Berkley pump - very similar to a AT 309. It pulls 4300RPM in Ft St John, but only 4000 down in Cochrane on the Bow. Scoots along about 70MPH with this setup. Going from aluminum A to the stainless A2 pulled about 700RPM out of the motor. By slowing it down, fuel consumption is much lower, but still have plenty of push. Makes a great pre-run boat for racing.

Ross from Burly had one in his sport pre runner for the worlds, it sounded gnarly on the water and hauled the mail!
