Old guy I talked to yesterday morning said they’re all catching lots of nice rainbows. We probably only fished an hour to test downrigger, line counter is out to lunch. Never too early though, to make sure the boat is still working properly for when nice weather arrives and you made plans. Nothing worse than boosting a boat at the launch while other guys wait, not my style. Only other issue I could find was dash lights not working. I’m sure the impeller could lose a shim and get touched with a file but its not quite warm enough outside to tear into it(think

Good idea, this is from 2 years ago when we went to test out the boat on OK lake the pump drive shaft bearing gave up and we ended up using the kicker to get back. I was told i was lucky cause it takes out the shaft with it usually but not in my case. Bearing and mechanical seal only.
The cause was a poorly grounded hall and motor right from factory. Only 75hrs on her at the time.

Yes we do, in July heading to Kinbasket, in August Vancouver island and in September Wells Grey to a remote location.

I ran into some old boys last year while I was fishing out of kitimat. They lost there main. Had to kicker back. Took them two days. They had a boat full of fish and beer. Not worried about being stranded. I asked them why they didn’t radio in for a tow job. They told me they weren’t in a hurry. There wives went to Mexico an they were on a adventure. Hahaha making memories.

The only problem to that is if your out on the ocean and not knowing the tides. A kicker depending on boat size will barely achieve 10mph. Tide will travel at minimum 9mph. Where there are islands and shallows can exceed 15+mph, almost like a river, so if you use the tide to carry you back in your golden but if you find your self going against the tide your going to end up where you really don't want to be.
One needs to know and understand when the tides are going in or out. If they are going out it is best to go to shore and wait it out or anchor up in the open where the water flows slower. But again anchoring has its own issues, you can actually sink a boat if you don't doit right with the tides.
Thus the need of ship to shore radio's and listening to weather/tide forecasts all day long.

I am keeping my eye open for a small kicker. Want one with a built in tank. Around the 4hp. Found a few on Kijiji but they are asking to much!

Why so small?
Why not a 7.5 or 8hp?
I had a 4.5hp Johnson once with built in tank, it hardly pushed a 12ft with 3 guys in it.

More for weight then anything. I don’t do a bunch of trolling so I figure it should be good for what I need it for. I won’t be trolling with down riggers or anything like that.

You should be able to find a 7.5 for cheap or even a 9.9. Older models of course.
