One of my buddies is with whistler SAR and was one of the guys that dug him out. Somehow his beacon ended up in search mode which is why it took so long to find him. It wouldn't matter anyways as he died from trauma.

1. Your beacon comes with a case and harness , use it. Putting your beacon in your pocket is just wrong, I know this is mainly a skier thing but I have had sled clients that have had there beacons in their packs before. You want your beacon worn down around your abdomen and to the side. The reason for this is to protect it. If it is against your rib cage you are more likely to have it damaged if you bash up against your bars or get sifted through trees or rocks. The last thing you would want is to survive an avy but not your beacon. Having it in it case helps protect it as well as keeps it in send mode. Not all beacons have this but should.

2. If you are not going to wear your crotch strap on your avy bag you may as well leave it at home. It doesn't do much good if it gets pulled over your head and off.

3. Gear is just backup for when you have a major brain fart. If you're not going to use your head your chance of sledding or skiing another day are drastically reduced.

Re: Some pointers regarding yesterday avy near Whistler.

Some bags don't have crotch straps. Like my BCA float 22 for example.
It has a waist belt. Would it stay on during a violent slide?

Hope I never have to find out.

Sno vest isn't coming off they are fitted not to. As far as the bca not having a strap I would get rid of it. Lay on your stomach with your pack on and arms up get your buddy to pull it off. An avy has way more force. Just my two cents

Was wondering about details, couldn't find any.
Was it cat skiing or a large touring group? News said 14 involved but that was it

I cant confirm nor deny but i would check with either the shop you got it from or contact BCA directly and get the strap for your bag. I had the same bag up till last year and it for sure had a crotch strap it just want sewn in like most are.

x2 on giving BCA a call it should have some floss for between your legs.

Is it possible that the leg strap is tucked away in the belt pocket? That's where mine was hiding when I bought it.

The guy caught was part of a group of 4 and was 3rd guy down. The other 10 were just in the area. There was only the one caught in the slide.

Crotch strap should be tucked in behind your waist belt strap pocket.

any more ideas of what kind of beacon it was and how it got switched to search?

i got a new pieps mico and it switches modes by itself when its removed from its case, suppose to switch back if it stops moving after a second side though. didnt really know it did that when i bought it!

its a new one for me, anyone have any more experience/opinions of it yet?
