honda 4man trouble

hey guys just picked up a 1996 honda forman 400 off my dads freind its gona be the new mud machine , but its not running right , apperntly the top end was just rebuilt ,but the thing wont rev it gets to what i would guess to be about 2000 rpms and thens spudders and back fires and just wont rev i thought it was the valves so i adjusted them and they seem to be fine i just dont know what else todo i cleaned the carb took the timeing chain cover off and the chain dosent apper to be all that lose but then again i dont know how tights it is saposed to be . what do you guys think this could be ? it will idle and run pretty good till about 2 grand thenn start crapping out :rant:

First suggest is fuel problem or Choke Problem!

The enrichener on that carb can sometime be a real PIA to get seated. Does the lever feel normal?

Sounds like it may be out of time by a tooth. I'd check that first. Also is the battery in good shape? A bad battery will make them do that too.

humm well the battery is enough to start the bike but barely, i have the timeing chain cover off so is there 2 marks to line up on the two gears? i want to make sure that good befor it goes back together lol then il check some other things like the battery and carb . but i forgot to say that when ideling there is a very loud sound comeing from the motor sounded like the valves ticking but they are at 006 were they should be so i dono what the sound could be

a honda will run for ever unlike the rest there slow and gutless though i want to get mine running right so i can go rideing soon! anyone have anyother ideas at all?

Did it run okay right after it was rebuilt?
Cam timing and compression are okay?

evrything seems to be good it has a lot of compression but it all back together and it looks like its getting too much gas the air filter was wet with gas. i found out the quad has all new valves,piston,rings and it smokes a bit blue could that be from too much gas? also i dont see any air-fuel screw on the carb like most things ?

well i was just rideing it around the yard and it runs fine untill a certin rpm (2000) ish then it craps out could it be electrical or something ? it seams to be doing the same thing my dads grizzly dose when in reverse its like it hits the rev limiter . if you dont rev it high you can ride it around fine i just dont get it

Does it still have the stock air box/filter etc installed? Carb slide moves freely?

yep still has the stock air box but has a k and n filter i dont think that carb even has a slide in it ?

In slide I mean the plastic thingy that is opened up by vacuum. Sits under the cap on top with the diaphragm. Check the diaphgragm also.

It sort of sounds like there is some dirt in the jets or something like that.If the air filter is wet with fuel i would think that the carb itself has to be the problem.

well i just went out and put the needle in the carb all the way down and it runs better but not how it sould still but it dose run quite a bit better
