Looking at purchasing a quad for the summer. Just wondering how the can am quads faired against the others. Looking at the 500 size
Have had honda's in the past but looking for something with better ride but same reliability.
thanks Driller

ride with a couple guys with the Can-ams; one has the outlander 650 and two guys have the renegade 500, and one with the renegade 800 and they have only had a couple issues; batteries seamed to die quickly and needed replacing, two of them can't go through water as they have always had issues with the belt slipping. that is all I know if from my limited experience with them

grizzly 700 is worth looking at, same durability as honda, but way better ride, fuel inj, power steering. makes for a great trail machine

The early Can Am's suffer from too low belt exhaust...allows water onto the belt if you go deep. It's a cheap, easy fix. A 500 v-twin Can Am Outlander or Renegade will beat up any other 500 class machine (and most 650-700 class machines) quite easily. Nothing will be as reliable as a Honda, but with normal maintenance, the Can Ams are as reliable as any others and offer class-leading power, excellent ride and durability. I also like the NEW Polaris XP series of quads....NOT the older series.

The 400 and 500 have struts in the front which are not quite as good as the double a arm of the 650 and 800
Also they do not have front u joints from the motor to the front Dif which equals less maint
my wife's 400 has almost 5000km and has only had brake pads done (stock front ones don't last) and i needed to lube the one way bearing in the clutch ( lost engine breaking) still has stock belt installed other than he with needing a full cleaning and greasing ( which should be yearly maint)

i have the outlander 800 with about 6000 i believe miles on it, replaced one belt and some breather boots for the belt. otherwise untouchable. just replaced it with the 1000 commander sxs. love it to. not sure what im doing with the 800 now. crazy power not good for kids, but still love the machine. havnt found enything that compares to the ride, power or entire machine.

I have had 4 can am quads. my first was an 800 gade and I sold it at just over 8000km, my second was a gade with engine mods etc and traded it for a 800 outlander. the gade had just under 8000km on it when traded. the outlander I traded for had 1600km on it and when I sold it and bout a new outlander it had just under 8000km on it and then I had 2500km on my 2010 outty before I bought my rzr. which I am now selling because I bought a 2012 1000 commander. (loved the rzr missed the can-am)

anyway with all those km this is what I had go wrong

belt housing warped because of engine heat (early years 07 and 08) easy fix and a warranty issue
water does get into the belt if going slow in 2ft of water etc like dave said easy fix ($15) to be exact
rear swing arms squeek (early 07 models) easy fix warranty as well.
my back breaks caught fire on my second gade but it was winter and cold and they froze on because I went through some water and they were not cleaned very well (lack of maintenance and a $400 fix) not bad.
break pads are crap from factory (1000km and replace) replace with EBC and get around 2000-2500km before replace.
few seals replaced under warranty.

thats all I had issues with but water pumps were an issue as well but warranty fix.

thats all I remember.

hondas are reliable yes but old tech
yamahas are reliable yes (700 machines not 660) but WAY under powered.

go to can-am and dont look back and buy a 650.
