I really like the looks of the new ktms...haven't rode one yet, but been thinking about getting one in the future. What do you think it would be like compared to my ltr450? whats your thoughts?

Depends what your doing with it. If you expect to motocross a 525, I'd suggest keeping your LT-R. I first learned to heel click on an LT-R!!

If you want something to take to the track, then get the 505SX or the 450SX. Both are more uncorked than the LT-R and make more power, but you miss the fun times that are had with EFI.

Seeing as how you got an '07 LT-R, (one of the best years for them, '06 and 07 where best due to better trannies than '08) I'd suggest just modding up your LT-R you have now.

If you want more power (If you plan to keep it) get an ATP intake cam for it, its the best one out there. Don't bother with the exhaust cam. They only add about 0.5HP. Also, K&N has a full intake tract and airbox replacement kit for the LT-R, this will open things up more and bring it on par with the KTM.

For handeling (on the track) get the Walsh upper A-arm kit, they are fully adjustable and retail for 500 bucks. A set of Floats or Elka's will top off your suspension. Your rear shocks (on '07's) have the kashama coating that the '08's got for the front shocks, so unless your hard core, then don't worry about the rear unless you get a new swing arm. Just slow down the rebound for whoops, and up the compression. I found this works best. 1 click will do.

Last thing, a set of tires. Thats the winning touch, after that, your LT-R will be a KTM killer..

Sorry for such a long post! :p

Do you still have your LTR? or any pics of it? I have been pretty happy with mine, a few minor things I want to do to it, but don't wanna get to carried away and take something that already runs awesome and mess that up! lol

No, I sold mine because nobody would fix it. It was a 2008 that blew 3rd gear, any LT-R '08 and above will blow sooner or later and no dealer could fix it, nor would they put in a new tranny. I got a few pics I can dig up if you want. Mine was yellow too.

-Yosh CRBM, PClll, Holeshots, Beadlock rear rims, t9 fronts, Rath nerfs, Hotwheels graphics, Protapers, race cut fenders, and Powermadd guards.

I also had a DASA and Yosh pipe and AC and Rath nerfs.

Sorry to hear that....kinda crapy. i've been looking to get nerf bars for mine, but I cant seem to find the ones Im looking for, kinda picky I guess lol. Did you see my other post in here about the performance chip i wrote about. I found it online and asked if anyone knew anything about it, or if it was worth it, but no one replied..check it out and let me know if you have any input. It supposed to give me 30 more hp, but I dunno. My brother has the same quad but his is the limited edition black one, and he just does whatever i do to mine lol, so ive started to not tell him when i add stuff and it pisses him off! I traded him my street bike for the 400ex we have now, and ive put alot of work into it, i think now he regrets trading it, but oh well. Thats one quad that is indestructable, we have put it through so much and it just keeps going....i like that reliablity. Ah sorry for getting off topic lol

Yeah, I'll end up getting an '07 sometime in the future, I love the LT-R's. And anything that says 30+ HP is false. Don't buy it. I know my LT-R's inside and out, I spent a lot of time with it, and 3000 some posts over on LTRCentral.

Oh, and when you get nerf bars, you really can't go wrong with the Rath Racing nerf bars, but make sure you get the Monster Peg upgrade. It adds to the price quite a bit, but well worth it. It takes some getting used to at first. (you aren't used to THAT MUCH PEG!!!) but once you had 'em, you won't ride with anything else. The day I bought my YFZ I ordered a set of Monster pegs.

On the LT-R they where night and day better than the AC's I had prior.

Just read my above posts and you'll get some great mods for your LT-R. I'd highly recommend the ATP Racing intake cam, thats the biggest bang for your buck mod next to the cherry bomb and the K&N full intake.

I would say you should compare the KTM SX 450 to the LTR 450. My vote would be for the KTM. Only complaint I have heard is they are valved too stiff for most people.

Also heard the plastics have a tendency to break when its cold out. But they are more race ready than the LT-R. I still like the Lt-R's though.

I could write a book on the good and bad points on the ltr 450.My son has been racing them for four years. He won the pro championship for alberta in 2010, so he beats the crap out of the machinces. The biggest trouble is the transmissions, he has taken out 3rd gear four times in the last two years ,the last time happened month ago it lasted 6 hours. Reason according to engine builders in the USA is there is only 65% gear contact, and 3rd gear is the most used gear. Only solution that helps some what is billet gears at 600.00 a set. Otherwise the quad is bullet proof.

Yep, I've heard people blowing 3rd gear lots over on LT-R450HQ and LT-R Central. 3rd gear os only common on the '08's though, anything below that and its the shift forks. Hinson has a fix for the '06-'07 LT-R's and ATP has the billet gear set for the '08+.

They also got complete tranny services where you can get straight cut gears and all that fancy stuff along with a complete top end overhaul for like 6K. Kinda costly for me though so I just sold mine.

If your son is hard core with his LT-R, call up ATP Racing engines.
