Hi guys.
I think the chain on my 14 m8000 is too loose. Planning to crack open the case. Assuming the automatic tensioner is not doing its job, how tight should I set the tensioner? How much should I be able to push the chain in with a finger? I'm planning to install a manual tensioner at some point. Probably after the season...
Hoping somebody can help.
Thanks in advance.

If your thinking the chain is too loose most likely you have more issues. The aluminum lower gear is most likely failing as they don't last like a steel one. The service manual states to set the tensioner in the fifth notch and it self adjusts from there. Personally I would be installing a manual tensioner if you plan on keeping the sled. The first thing I did to my 16 was regear, manual tensioner and the steering bushing.

I did swap out the aluminum gear last season. Once in a while when in reverse I hear a ratcheting sound and the sled doesn't move. Hoping the gears aren't destroyed, but just a stretched chain and loose tensioner...

I wouldn't ride it again without investigating that. A loose chain is soon to be a broken one.

If your taking it apart to inspect it just replace everything. It’s not expensive, bought a 21/49 gear up kit with manual tensioner and hyvo chain for like $250 a couple years ago for my old 14, they like the gear up way better anyway and gives you piece of mind, the job is more time consuming than anything so might as well put it back together with new
