The 850 is a bigger stroke same bore and with new fuel systems like direct injection meeting epa standards is not rhat hard with more CI. Example look at ford and GM tue eccoboost is a small turbo engine, coyote is a small NA V8 capable of big hp and the GL LS is big cube old school push rod V8 all pass much tigher emmisions standards. When dealing with epa you emmisions standards are not taken at WOT same as car wot goes into open loop. Imo cat has been working on this engine to perfect it for years and they didnt expect doo to come with the 850 and because hp is on par they are going to stick with this cuz they have allways been top of the class reliability.

Never really thought about the epa , you make some valid points that make sense. My point this morning was if the 800 is as powerful as the Doo 850 why would we need more? That being said if a 860 came out i would buy it. Maybe with the sale some needed R&D will get this BB out to the masses.
Good news is Trump being the realist he is will be rolling back the EPA's crazy mandate.

And if California becomes part of Mexico we will have better diesel trucks.

So we may see some.more powerful engines during the next 4 years.
Win win.

Well, I'm impressed for 2018. For fun, I will take out a rental for a weekend to try it out. Already been informed it'll be a $5-6000 difference to upgrade. Not doing it. I will drop and roll belt drive my 16 this summer, once warranty is off, tweak up my motor cause that's what I like to do, and ride out my remaining years on this 16. For 6k I can dress mine up real nice. Already have $17k into it...... gotta ride it

Really dissapointed. I was hoping for some big new's from cat this spring. Hopefully I'm wrong and they got something else brewing. It actually feels like they know there due for something new but don't have it so they threw this out there. I've always liked the cat colours. Not a big fan of there release colour.
Do you think this is the whole release or is there more to come?

This motor was planned for last year after all.

Be careful that could be an expense ride lol i've had some of them. I am being told AC and the dealers will have sleds available to ride for demos, similar to previous years. Might save the rental. The time and dates will be announced after the dealer show if its happening. The more I read the more I like this new sled, they have done a lot of things right. The real test will be in the ride.

My cat is at the vet right now for a check up. 2018 will be on the floor for Tuesday.

I love the new sled, like the looks, like the changes. Even though they built hp where they definitely needed it(low to mid)I still wanted more overall hp, and still need better boards but other than that I think this 18 chassis is as good as it gets.

I can't ride mine to full potential so I can't justify the $$$ difference. With that said, with only 20lbs stock to stock difference in weight, I've already shed more lbs, changed boards and have more ponies, so I will burn more fossils up with my 16, it'll push me along fine for another season. Good luck to those going to brave the new ride. I believe it's a winner

just got back from a good ride, about 10 guys with the mentioned sleds...most were stock or close, one 17 mc had a pipe, 165 850 stock, all the 18's and king cat were stock (factory sponsored demo rides, in utah, elevation 8-9 k, moderate terrain, snow in parking lot about 4" of heavy wet; up in hills about 12-14" fairly light; terrain moderate, no chutes due to avy conditions)...riders were all competent, just wanting to get a feel of the 18's....everyone loved the king cat power, and equally hated the weight, fastest sled uphill in the open, that was its best game, even our best rider couldn't see one in his garage, even though he had been thinking about it....drag races up moderate hill in 6-8" of medium heavy snow, about 350 yds, the 18 162 800 would pull the 16's and seventeens about 5 sled lengths for stock sleds with cans, the piped 17 mc about 2-3 lengths and the stock 850 about 3 lengths...anybody asleep at the start line would lose, if you lost a length at the start, no one could make it up.....i ride a 16 i bought at the end of the year good deal, belt drive, oil delete, ti can, my clutching (good), bdx boards, experienced rider, what i saw...18 has smooth engine, harder to pull over, but better tuning that started 1st pull, never saw anyone have to do more (3 18 800s, one 153, two 162s)...18 kept front end down better than 16s or 17s...in trees the 18s maneuvered about the same as the mc's, but had better mid range power, noticeably so....there was a smoothness in the 18s, engine, clutching, and turn entry, rolling it on its side etc....doo guy liked it big time...rolling it on its side was noticeably more consistent and easier than 16 or 17s, and you could get it further over on its side before losing the track and washing out...clutching was good, engagement about 32-3400, one of the 162s maybe had lighter weights, over revving on the top and not pulling the mid-range as hard, didn't ask the rep, as everyone has their preferences...i ride with a lot of guys and sleds, don't have one particular brand tattooed anywhere on my body and could buy anything that i saw as an advantage to me...i still don't care for the doo handling, but it's a good machine....despite poo guys claim to being the best handling, flickable, etc....the 16 and newer cats get my vote for best tree sled, have the best engine (doo guys could argue that, maybe), the new cat engine gets it done the best (hopefully is as dependable as the suki), it's a smooth runner for sure....with several guys never giving the 18s a rest, i never smelled a belt getting hot, looked inside once, the clutches were warm as expected, but not hot....overall good sled, now just wait to see the choices for snocheck....

Good write up! Sounds like lots of positive improvements for cat. More cat mountian sales means more R&D money and improvnents for everyone. Hopefully this will boost cat sales and 2018 will have the main 3 fight for sales and push for more refinemnts. I don't think you mentioned but how was the 18 to pull into or back into a steeper side hill vs your 16 ? Any noticable difference in weight on the front or front suspension ?

Anything like this graph that shows turbo options? Would be cool to see what and where they are all at. Project for you?

In 3 years Arctic Cat won't be making sleds any more. That will leave Yamaha without a Chassis and you'll only have 2 choices.

BRP or Polaris. Don't worry though, you won't have anywhere decent to ride one anyway, when they close all the mountains down to motorized traffic.

Plus our snowpack gets less and less as the years go by. Sledding is a dieing sport:(

your forecast was correct. Now what about this liberal government?? How long until they are gone?
