Does it back fire out the exhaust or intake? Check your throttle switch if the cable is out of adjustment it can cause this.

If it's backfiring out the exhaust most likely cause is to much fuel. When you cleaned the carb did you check the needle and seat, float height and choke adjustment?
If any of these are wrong it will cause over fueling. The throttle switch and kill button are on the same circuit so if you bypass the switch neither will function. If the eng is over fueled it could run away be carefull. To bypass the switch you unplug it and place a jumper wire in the harness connector. I would be leaning towards the carb for your issue

sounds about right to me, what are you doing with the choke when trying to start it? what do the plugs look like when it dies? easy to check the plugs and it can tell alot.
