How hard is it to replace diamond drive bearing before it costs a lot more? And would someone who's done it before willing to either direct me or do it with me for some beer

Its not tough to do, like it is already mentioned find a youtube video. That is you best deal.
Personally i would go a step further then just replacing the torrington. I would replace the axle seal also, this is one of the reason these would fail, there is very little oil inside the drive unit and if the seal leaks you will never know and with the little oil it has it would run dry in little time. Too replace the axle seal you will need to pull the entire drive out, not hard to do. Toughest part is removing the axle bolt inside the drive axle, you will need a extra long extension to reach the bolt and it is generally torque on with red loctite. You reach the bolt by going into the axle at the brake side (RH side) the axle is hollow.

If it means anything, the cheap Chinese bearing let go when I was up in forester. Heard it pop once when I landed a little jump. I managed to limp it all the way back to the truck and then I fixed it on the trailer with a simple tool kit. No specia tools needed. Had a couple chipped teeth on the planetary gears but just rotated them so that they wouldn’t all be contacting the sun gear at the same time. And the sled’s been used ever since, and no problems. I just used a 75-90 synthetic gear oil in it as well.

I have to throw out a kudos to All Seasons in cranbrook the dealership. They never had the bearing but they got ahold of one through the extensive parts department through finning I believe. Cross referenced me a new bearing and had someone bring it back from sparwood to cranbrook for me. Drove down from radium and saved my trip really.

When you rebuild it, BDX makes a kit that includes everything. Or you can try piece together the kit yourself.

Careful when putting the torx screws back in on the cover as well. They strip stupid easy.
