IMPORTANT NOTICE

The Alberta Beach Snowmobile Club would like to inform all users of the Alberta Beach Snowmobile Trail System that the portion of trail from Rng Rd 52 to Darwell adjacent to Highway 633 and TWP Rd 550 to Darwell adjacent to Highway 765 is now closed. This is approximately 5 km of our trail system but it does divide our trail into 2 parts. The reason for the closure is that riding the ditches on any numbered highway in the Province of Alberta is illegal and up until this year the Provincial Government had turned a blind eye to the problem but after much lobbying they did come up with a grandfathering solution for any existing trails which did include ours. There would be a special permit issued for existing trails but the local municipality (in this case the Lac Ste Anne County) would have to apply for the permit. Our County has chosen not to apply for the permit due to liability issues. Our directors are currently working with the County to come up with an alternate solution to the problem but until that time no permit holder would be covered under the conditions of your trail pass purchase, if you ride on the sections mentioned. The remainder of the trail is still intact.

If you have any questions regarding this notice please contact info@absnowmobileclub.com or Alberta Beach Snowmobile Club at Box 329 Alberta Beach AB T0E 0A0. Please watch for updates at www.absnowmobileclub.com and Facebook.

The area that is closed is marked in RED on the attached map, but its only along Sec Hwy 633 that it is closed.

I took the attached map off of the Alberta Beach Snowmobile Club website.

We have not updated the Map as of yet, as we are hoping to change councils mind. Closing this section of trail is detrimental to Darwell (gas, and restaurant/bar), and to the safety of people using the trail, landowners in the area etc. If it is ungroomed an unmaintained there could be obstacles in there that could cause major damage or injury to people.

You can acquire a PDF of this trail map (our current map) here: http://www.absnowmobileclub.com/Files/snowmobiletrailmap.pdf

If anyone would like to ask why the county isn't helping with keeping this section open even though the Feds have grandfathered It. Please call the Lac St Anne county office. Ask for Robert Kohn. He is the counsellor in that area. Maybe he can explain to each and everyone who asks. WHY. Lac St Anne county office #. 780-785-3411. This is a great trail and we need to fight to keep it open.

These trails are a perfect way for a families to spend some quality time together I guess our mayor Robert kohn doesn't think so never mind the countless hours the snowmobile club and all its volunteers have put into this trail system over the years to make it a safe way to enjoy the outdoors
I Will be calling forsure 780-785-3341 ask for Robert kohn

or maybe just sell all the toys and tell the kids we have to stay home and just buy a x-box because our mayor and counselors of lac st Anne county don't want us to play outside on the trails anymore

So does this mean we can't ride our powertobbogans in the ditch or haul a sled on a sled deck with a half ton?

Goddamm NDP government

has absolutely ZERO to do with the NDP and 100% to do with a certain individual on County Council and his gang of misfits (Robert Kohn 780-785-3341). get those calls into this moron, and into the county as a whole, see if we can get enough people vocal and get them to do a few pages of paperwork to have this section of trail remain open.

I am not sure if I totally agree with your statement that our current government has ZERO to do with what is going on. I think some calls / emails / complaints to our minister of environment Shannon Phillips can't hurt. If the minister can be convinced that motorized recreation is an important part of our culture, then maybe she would put pressure on the municipalities to make it work. I'm not holding my breath but I think she needs to be involved in the process too.

I think the problem is that snowmobiles get lumped in with quads/sxs's/etc.....snowmobiles do NOT do damage to the land like quads do. It is hard to get officials to take our sides when they see the damage done to trails / wet lands / etc by the wheeled off road vehicles.

The province is stating that our trail IS grandfather-able with the new legislation, and that paperwork just needs to be submitted to get the permit. Council has to do the paperwork and are refusing too.

I agree...it sounds the county is reluctant to make this happen.....maybe cc'ing the minister with everything sent to the county may help....show her what turds the county reps are

the province of Alberta government has put in a lot of money to fix and expand this trail system with the help of Alberta beach snowmobile club and trying to respect all the residents and land owners that are directly affected by the trail system I have been riding these trails for 15 years and I would have to say 99 percent of users are respectful of the trail very rare do I see garbage or empty cans lying around
the main point is Robert Kohn is trying his hardest to ruin this for every one he can't close the rest of the trails but the only loophole he found was being able to close the section of trail that goes along the ditch to darwell which makes it impossible to link all main trails together all he has to do to change this is to send all his paper work back to the province and then all will be back to normal and we can ride into the powder sunset
(Robert Kohn 780-785-3341)
Call him he would love to hear from all of us to just do his job and get along with everyone in his county

I find it interesting that the county sights it as a liability reason for not putting the application in for the grandfathering. I would like them to explain the difference between allowing for ditch riding on a controlled and monitored area vs having a off road bylaw that allows people to go ripping on the county maintained roads. Liability is the same either way.
